The Gauteng Department of Education spent more than R45 000 per learner in a special needs school in 2016, which is more than three times the amount spent per pupil in an ordinary public school. This confirms the Department’s commitment to ensure that learners with special needs access the additional assistance they need in the form of specialist teachers, specialised teaching aids, therapists, medicine, and so on. However, as the Ayurvedic saying goes: “When the diet is wrong, medicine is of no use”, all this investment could be in vain if the food the learners are eating is not supportive of these efforts.
